The Impact Of World War On The World - 1808 Words

After four long years of detrimental war, Eastern Europe s power and importance in the world began to decline. World War 1 took a toll on the population and economy of many Eastern European nations. Prior to the first World War, most of Eastern Europe was controlled by two great powers, Germany and Russia. Germany had control over many Eastern European countries such as Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. However, a year after the first World War ended, Germany came to an agreement with the Allied powers and formed The Treaty of Versailles which changed Europe’s Geography tremendously. Poland and Russia gained some of Germany’s territory, while Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, and the northern portion of Yugoslavia became official countries. After World War 1, some Eastern European nations were able to establish themselves as independent countries while others remained dominated by dictatorship. One nation that was successfully able to free itself from two of the major pow ers of the Great War was Finland. The First World War allowed Finland to have a chance at claiming their independence as a growing nation. In 1918, after the first World War had ended, Finland was able to settle a peace agreement with Germany. They strengthened their ties with Northern European countries and maintained a flourishing economy.
